  • SLOYA held it's first meeting on Sunday, February 25th at 2PM in the Bank Room of the Heron Road Community Center (1480 Heron Road). We had over 30 people attend the meeting!! Thanks to everyone who showed up. We hope you had fun and hope to see you AND your friends next time. (Photos of the meeting coming soon!)

  • SLOYA sponsors two Sri Lankan children through the Foster Parents Plan. SLOYA donated a portion of its proceeds from the 2006 Mocktails Fundraiser to the Foster Parents Plan in order to sponser two Sri Lankan children. We have just received the information about the two sponsored children. The two girls we were fortunate to sponsor are Achala and Marsook. See below for more information and photos of the girls.

    Achala’s family
    Father: Jayathilaka, born in 1967, a peasant farmer
    Brother: Menaka Pradeep Kumara, born in 1990
    Sister: Madushika Dilhani, born in 1993
    Sister: Achini Shanika Maduwanthi, born in 1996
    Achala’s family lives in a house made of mud and sticks with a tile and slate roof.

    Schooling
    Achala attends primary school. It takes less than 30 minutes to reach school.

    Health
    According to the family, Achala has been healthy and has not suffered from any serious illness.
    Access to Water: The family obtains water all year round from rivers, streams or springs, less than 1km away.
    Latrine: The family uses a hole in the ground.
    Health facility: The nearest health facility is more than two hours away.

    Marsook does not attend school because she is too young.

    Health
    Marsook is currently receiving basic vaccinations. According to the family, Marsook has been healthy and has not suffered from any serious illness.
    Access to Water: The family obtains water all year round from an open well, in the house backyard.
    Latrine: The family has a private latrine.
    Health facility: The nearest health facility is about forty five minutes away.
